As students continue to read informational text, they will apply close reading strategies. In doing so, students will read a shorter text multiple times. Each time students read, there is a different focus to help students gain a deeper understanding of the text. Students will highlight headings, underline topic sentences to paragraphs, and most importantly circle 3-5 key words from the text. By using these strategies, students can clearly identify the main idea and respond to text-specific questions by citing evidence.
