signaled the start of the Revolutionary War.  Although the sound could not be heard across the ocean, this event was noticed by many all over the world.  Was the British army the most powerful if a group of untrained colonists were able to fight them off?  After examining events of the first Continental Congress, students learned of Paul Revere's famous midnight ride and the battles of Lexington and Concord. Students will then examine the events of the second Continental Congress and significant battles in the war.  The next challenge?  Establishing a government.  Students will examine different viewpoints of historical figures and the impacts of their views on the structure of the government.  Students will read a significant amount of informational text and will determine the main ideas to compare viewpoints.
Please remind your child that he/she must take an active role in his/her learning by TAKING NOTES IN CLASS WHEN MATERIAL IS PRESENTED.  These notes are a valuable source of information when it is time to review for a checkpoint.  It is also important to make sure that any notes or reading materials that are passed out are put safely inside each student's social studies folder.
