Myths & Legends

November 2, 2014
Will be our focus as we begin the second quarter.  Students will explore several myths, including Pandora's Box.  In doing so, students will identify the unique characteristics of this genre.  Students will also build upon their prior knowledge to compare the setting and characters.  To determine the theme of the myth, students will examine how characters react to challenges that they face.  This will also provide students with the chance to practice writing narrative summaries.  

Please remember to monitor your child's literature circle progress each week to make sure that he/she is prepared for his/her weekly group discussion.   
 

During the last week of quarter one...

October 27, 2014
students will continue summarizing informational text.  When summarizing, students must determine the most important information to include.  It's important to synthesize ideas so that the summary is brief.  For example, instead of having separate sentences about where Paul Revere grew up and when he was born, one could say both in one well-written sentence.  A summary should contain a topic sentence, be written in your own words, and contain the most important information in a logical order....
