Text Structures...

...help readers understand how the author presents his/her information.  Over the next two weeks, students will use key words to identify the following text structures:  description, sequence, compare & contrast, cause & effect, and problem & solution.  Students will also use visuals (graphic organizers) to help determine text structure.  For instance, a descriptive text could be organized using a web.  All details and supporting ideas would branch out from the central topic.  A Venn diagram (two overlapping circles) helps to show how items are similar and different.

This week students will review the characteristics and elements of plays.  Since students will learn about characteristics of myths in writing, our play for reading is also a myth -  Pandora's Box!  .  Students will identify the importance of stage directions, dialogue, and organization of a play.  After examining the story and play, students will compare both versions by using key ideas from each source.
